There is something deeply comforting about an old wool quilt. The weight, warmth, texture, and evidence of countless hours of handwork simply cannot be replicated by modern manufacturing.
This beautiful antique wool quilt measures approximately 77” x 64” and was entirely hand pieced and hand quilted from a wonderful assortment of old wool and wool blend clothing fabrics. Rich reds, navy blues, forest greens, tweeds, plaids, and suiting fabrics come together in a striking geometric design that feels both primitive and timeless.
Unlike many surviving antique quilts, this example retains its wonderfully thick and lofty construction. The backing is wool flannel and the interior appears to contain wool batting or a wool-rich batting, giving the quilt substantial weight, warmth, and texture. It is exactly the type of quilt that would have been treasured in a farmhouse bedroom or kept nearby through long winters for extra warmth.
Measurements:
• 77” x 64”
Approximate Date:
• Circa 1890–1920
Construction:
• Entirely hand pieced
• Entirely hand quilted
• Wool and wool blend patchwork top
• Wool flannel backing
• Believed to contain wool batting or wool-rich batting
Condition:
This antique quilt remains in very good condition for its age. There are a couple of tiny holes in the quilt top, each measuring less than approximately 1/8”. The backing remains remarkably well preserved. Expected age-related wear, scattered loose fibers, and signs of use are present and consistent with a genuine antique textile. Please review all photographs carefully.
This is not merely bedding—it is an authentic piece of American textile history. The use of recycled wool garments, the hand stitching, the wool flannel backing, and the substantial warmth of the quilt all speak to a time when textiles were created to last generations. It would make a stunning display piece in a primitive, farmhouse, cabin, or folk art interior while remaining fully usable as a decorative coverlet or throw.
Please Note
