For your consideration is a striking vintage art pottery planter produced by Mullins Ceramics of Nippa, Kentucky. Measuring an impressive 10 inches in diameter and 8 inches tall, this substantial planter represents one of the most elaborate examples of Mullins pottery I have encountered.
Unlike the smaller leaf dishes, ashtrays, and utility wares most commonly associated with Mullins Ceramics, this planter is an uncommon large-format example featuring exceptionally deep sculptural decoration. Two opposing sides display beautifully modeled three-dimensional owls surrounded by flowing foliage, floral scrollwork, and richly textured relief work. The remaining sides continue the organic motif with raised botanical decoration that wraps continuously around the body.
The glaze is especially attractive, combining warm amber and chocolate brown tones with vivid orange highlights that naturally pool across the raised details. The result is a piece with remarkable depth and visual interest from every angle.
The underside bears the impressed maker's mark:
MULLINS CERAMICS
NIPPA, KY
Measurements
Diameter: 10 inches
Height: 8 inches
Approximate Date
Estimated Circa 1970s
Condition
Very good vintage condition.
There are no cracks, repairs, or structural damage.
There is one tiny fleabite on the underside of the base along with a couple of extremely small fleabites inside the rim of the planter. These minor imperfections are difficult to notice during normal display and do not detract from the overall appearance. The glaze retains an excellent gloss with vibrant coloration throughout.
Although Mullins Ceramics pieces do appear on the collector market, I have been unable to locate another documented planter of this size, decoration, or form featuring the sculpted owl motif. While I cannot state that it is one-of-a-kind, it appears to be an uncommon large-format example that is seldom encountered and would make an outstanding addition to a collection of Kentucky art pottery, Southern regional ceramics, or American studio pottery.
This impressive planter works beautifully as a statement piece whether displayed with a trailing houseplant or showcased on its own as sculptural art pottery.
Vintage and Antique Items
Thank you for considering one of my carefully selected vintage or antique treasures. I specialize in authentic pieces that have lived a full life before finding their way to my shop. Because of their age, these items should be expected to display the honest signs of time and use that make them unique—such as patina, finish wear, fading, scratches, dings, minor imperfections, age-related discoloration, or other characteristics consistent with decades of history. I make every effort to provide clear photographs, accurate descriptions, and note any significant condition issues; however, no vintage or antique item should be expected to present or perform like a newly manufactured product. By purchasing, you acknowledge that normal age-related wear and variations are part of the character and authenticity of vintage and antique pieces. Please review all photos and descriptions carefully and feel free to ask any questions before purchasing, as I am always happy to provide additional information.
