Some objects become more compelling because they have survived.
This beautifully hand-carved antique alabaster bust has lived well over a century, carrying with it not only the remarkable craftsmanship of its maker, but also the evidence that someone valued it enough to preserve it. The historic restorations are part of its story—a quiet reminder that true antiques were meant to be cherished rather than replaced.
Depicting a young woman wearing a delicately sculpted bonnet and flowing cape, the carving possesses the soft translucence that only genuine alabaster can achieve. Light gently passes through the stone, giving the sculpture a warmth impossible to reproduce with resin or composite materials. Every fold of the bonnet, every carefully carved ruffle, and the peaceful expression reflect the skill of an artisan working entirely by hand.
Whether displayed atop a marble mantel, nestled among antique leather-bound books in a library, or incorporated into a thoughtfully collected French Country or European-inspired interior, this sculpture brings an unmistakable sense of history and quiet elegance.
Unlike modern reproductions designed to imitate age, this piece has earned its character honestly through generations of careful ownership.

Attributed to an Italian alabaster workshop.
Estimated Circa: 1890–1930
Italian workshops, particularly those in Volterra and Florence, became internationally respected during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for producing finely hand-carved alabaster sculptures. Today these works are admired for both their artistry and the increasingly limited supply of authentic antique examples that remain in private hands.
Condition
Very good antique condition.
This sculpture retains two historic restorations:
• Restoration around the neck
• Restoration at the transition between the bust and pedestal
Both restorations appear stable and have naturally aged alongside the sculpture. Rather than distracting from the presentation, they contribute to the authenticity and lived history of the piece. Light surface wear, minor marks, and age-related discoloration consistent with antique alabaster should be expected and appreciated as part of its character.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they are considered part of the description.
Note: I am an expert in shipping antiques of all sizes and weights. Your bust will be safe in my care and will arrive unharmed by the dribbling of the carrier.
Why Collect Antique Alabaster?
For more than a century, genuine Italian alabaster has been prized by collectors and interior designers for its remarkable translucence, warmth, and ability to soften a room. Unlike manufactured décor, every hand-carved alabaster sculpture is subtly unique, preserving the individual touch of the artisan who created it.
Today, antique alabaster busts have become increasingly sought after as statement pieces in libraries, studies, curated shelves, and European-inspired interiors. Their enduring appeal lies not in perfection, but in the quiet elegance that only authentic age and craftsmanship can provide.

Vintage & Antique Statement
Thank you for considering one of my carefully selected vintage or antique treasures. I specialize in authentic pieces that have lived a full life before finding their way to my shop. Because of their age, these items should be expected to display the honest signs of time and use that make them unique—such as patina, finish wear, fading, scratches, dings, minor imperfections, age-related discoloration, or other characteristics consistent with decades of history. I make every effort to provide clear photographs, accurate descriptions, and note any significant condition issues; however, no vintage or antique item should be expected to present or perform like a newly manufactured product. By purchasing, you acknowledge that normal age-related wear and variations are part of the character and authenticity of vintage and antique pieces.
